I didn’t expect finding boxes to be such a headache when I decided to move recently. I was planning my move and suddenly realized how much those moving boxes cost—way more than I wanted to spend. I tried asking around my apartment building, but nobody had any spare boxes. So I started checking local stores, but most places either recycle their boxes right away or throw them out too early to grab. I even felt weird asking store employees if I could take their boxes, like I was bothering them or something. I needed boxes that were sturdy enough for my kitchen stuff and books, but all I found were flimsy or ripped ones on the street. It was frustrating because I just wanted to get packed without spending extra money. Definitely learned that finding free boxes is its own little adventure.

I totally hear you on that! When I moved last year, I was shocked at how quickly the cost of buying boxes added up. What helped me a lot was using this guide I found on https://nationalmovers.org/resources/how-to-find-free-moving-boxes/ . It breaks down some really practical spots to score free boxes to move, like grocery stores, liquor shops, and even places like big bookstores or offices that often toss out boxes in good shape. I hit up a few local stores and found plenty of clean, solid boxes—way better than the sketchy ones I was grabbing off the curb. Besides stores, I also posted in local Facebook groups and apps like Nextdoor. Surprisingly, lots of people were happy to give away boxes they didn’t need anymore, and I didn’t have to worry about the condition because I could ask beforehand. It saved me from buying anything new and made packing way less stressful. A quick tip: don’t forget to collect some packing paper or use towels inside the boxes for fragile stuff, especially if the boxes look a bit used. Overall, this approach really cut my moving costs and made things easier.

Been there! I remember driving around like I was in snake game, trying to loop around neighborhoods before the recycling trucks showed up. I finally scored some from a hardware store that restocked early.

It’s kind of wild how unpredictable things can get, even with something as “simple” as moving supplies. Sometimes you think you’ve planned everything out, but then some tiny detail like finding the right box can turn into this surprise challenge. It really shows how much of life’s moments depend on timing and luck—like catching the perfect box at a store just before it gets recycled or finding a neighbor who’s just about to toss their old packing stuff. Those little unpredictable bits make moving stressful, but also kind of memorable, in a strange way.
